Isabel lived in Granada when she commissioned Columbus to sail the ocean blue, so although Columbus Day is a national holiday, it is particularly significant for Granada. Click on the pictures to enlarge.

The Columbus Day parade in Granada.

More of a solemn and religious procession actually.

Many members of the Church, town government, and I think the guy with the shades may be from the Mafia. (This is taken at night.)

Either she´s really heavy or it´s an honor to carry her.

The fountain celebrating Isabel commissioning Columbus. There´s more to this story than we learned in grade school. Isabel and Ferdinand had just kicked the moors out of Granada a few months before, thus unifying Spain under Catholic rule for the first time.

We marched up the hill opposite the Alhambra, set down on a terrace overlooking the valley, and sipped Andulusian Sherry while the lights came on. Well worth the climb.

Once again on this trip, I was very, very sorry I didn´t bring my good camera.

The Alhambra is as beautiful at night as it is in the daytime.

Taking a refresher after our trek. Me with roomies Helena and Hendrik.
