Michael Crichton: State of Fear
Crichton's basic thesis is how the powers that be want to keep the public in a state of fear so that they can continue to maintain and increase the power over us. Specifically, he examines the whole global warming question. This is a curious book. Although it is nominally a work of fiction, it contains more scientific references than most academic papers on global warming. As a work of fiction, it's a little stretched compared to most of Crichton's. As a political polemic, it is excellent and well-reasoned. Everyone should read this book.
CHARLES VAN DOREN: A History of Knowledge : Past, Present, and Future
This is one of the best summaries of the development of human civilization (primarily western). It would make an excellent textbook, except that it is far too readable. The author is one of Mortimer Adler's proteges. I recommend this highly for anyone wanting to understand our world.
Will Cuppy: The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody
An excellent book to put history in perspective for all you empire-builders out there.
